Las Cruces, New Mexico has so much to offer anyone looking to relocate or retire. The city has just added a great new amenity that will be enjoyed by residents of all ages. After years of planning and in the face of a recession forcing budget cuts statewide, the 35,000-square-foot facility is refreshing to residents year-round.
The much anticipated indoor aquatic facility opened last week, just in time for the cooler fall weather! With 5,000 square feet of water surface area, the aquatic center includes a recreational pool with water slide and play features, a 25-meter lap pool, a lazy river and plenty of room to add recreational facilities in the future.
Leading in efficiency
From the landscaping to the design of the building, the Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center is designed to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.
Bike racks are available near the entrance walkway from the main parking lot, and the open area surrounding the center has been landscaped with native grasses for water saving and dust abatement. Low water-use plants also are used throughout.
The exterior windows provide an abundance of natural light, which leads to the reduction of energy use and improves the overall well being of staff exposed to natural light. Low-E glass is used throughout the building, which allows light to pass through without the heat of the sun.
Recycling bins also are located throughout the building. Also, construction waste – as much as possible – was recycled instead of going into landfills, and many of the products used in construction of the building are manufactured using recycled content.
The swimming-pool water also is filtered using one of the most efficient filtration systems available. The backwashing system of older pools has been replaced by a system that disposes of little or no water, designed by aquatic designers to be state of the art.
Year-round fun
The Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center is available to the public for year-round recreational use, as well as swim lessons, lap swimming, life guarding and water safety instructor classes, water exercise classes and private rentals.
With an average water temperature of 82 degrees in the large pool area, there’s plenty of fun for young ones and the young at heart. A zero depth entry area in the recreational pool allows for all ages and abilities to easily enter the pool. The completely enclosed water slide, cascades, bubblers, dumping buckets and fan sprays are just some of the fun features.
The 25-meter rectangular lap pool also is included for year-round lap swimming, and an activity pool was designed with a built-in bench for swimming instruction for young er swimmers.
The facility also includes a warming pool, with water The recreational pool includes fun features such as dumping buckets, cascades, bubblers and an enclosed water slide.
The second level of the facility is not yet completed, but provides space for the city to add additional exercise equipment, a workout area with weights, cycles and an indoor jogging track. Staff and services in the future will be added without having to build a completely new facility, making it a true recreational and aquatic center as originally planned.

- 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday
- 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday
