COLUMBUS, N.M. – A dark time in Borderland history has evolved into a friendship fiesta.
In the early morning darkness of March 9, 1916, Gen. Francisco “Pancho” Villa and his band of about 600 Mexican revolutionaries invaded the little New Mexican border town of Columbus. By the time dawn broke, the town was a smoldering ruin. Among the dead were 18 Americans, including eight soldiers and 10 civilians, and reportedly more than 200 Villistas. The bold foreign invasion triggered a massive military buildup that transformed a small town into New Mexico’s biggest city almost overnight.
On Saturday, hundreds of horsemen will ride over the border to celebrate more peaceful times as the now-compatible border towns of Columbus and Palomas, Mexico, join for an international festival at Pancho Villa State Park.
What: Events and programs commemorating Pancho Villa’s March 9, 1916, raid on Columbus and Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing’s 1916 Punitive Expedition into Mexico
Where: Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus
Highlights: Celebrates the continuing peace and friendship between Mexico and the United States with music, folklorico dancers, food and craft vendors, special presentations and a parade with hundreds of horseback riders from the Mexican border, including the Cabalgata Binacional Villista who will end their 14-day journey from Mexico.
When: 9 to 4 p.m. Saturday (March 6, 2010)
